The Mystery of the Hobbit – Homo floresiensis

When I was on the island of Flores in Indonesia, I couldn’t pass up the chance to geek out on the anthropological mystery of “The Hobbit species” Homo floresiensis. We have yet to figure out where they came from, how they got there, and what happened to the little guys. Worse yet a fierce debate broke out about whether or not they were just a diseased population of modern Homo sapiens.

Immigrant Health in La Plata County, Colorado

My undergraduate thesis project:

Barger, David. “Immigrant Health Care in La Plata County, Colorado.” Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. 2009.

Abstract
Bi-lateral relations between the United States and Mexico have created great incentive for Mexicans to brave the journey across the northern border to find work. These immigrants inevitably face several barriers to receiving adequate health care. Among these barriers, the most significant are the language barrier, cultural differences between home and host countries, and lack of insurance. Although the U.S. was founded on principles of universal human rights, the current debates on health care and immigration are too heated to assume the barriers to care will be overcome through federal action. Instead, a community-oriented health program is needed to increase access to care for immigrants. This paper presents a single-site ethnography of La Plata County’s community-based health program. The research concludes that the program is successful in that it employs the proper structural elements to assist immigrants in overcoming barriers to health care, but could also use improvement in a couple of minor areas.
